NCAA Championships Central
VILLANOVA, Pa.--Senior sprinter
Shericka Ward (Leesburg, Fla.) and sophomore middle distance runner
Emily Lipari (Greenvale, N.Y.) have both been accepted into the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships in an announcement on Monday evening. The selections were announced for the national championships meet which will take place this coming Friday and Saturday in Nampa, Idaho. Ward will compete in the 60 meter hurdles and Lipari will compete in the Mile at the NCAA Championships.
Ward has enjoyed a sensational season in the 60 meter hurdles and it will culminate in her first individual selection to the indoor national championships. She is coming off setting a meet record at the ECAC Championship this past weekend, where her time of 8.18 in the finals marked the first time in her career she has broken 8.2 in competition. She had the fastest time in both the preliminaries (8.23) and the semifinals (8.28) at the ECAC meet and went on to win the ECAC crown in the finals. The time of 8.18 broke the meet record of 8.19 set in 2000 by former Villanova student-athlete
Charmaine Walker.
At the BIG EAST Championships last month Ward was the runner-up in the 60 meter hurdles and received All-BIG EAST honors for the third consecutive year. She also came in third in the semifinals at the Penn State National in January, where her time of 8.25 was a personal best up until this past weekend. Ward also scored a win at the NYC Gotham Cup during the regular season.
Lipari also earned her first individual selection to the indoor national championships, although she ran in the national meet last season and led off the Wildcats champion distance medley relay squad. This season Lipari has established a new personal best in the Mile on two different occasions. She broke the 4:40 mark for the first time in her career at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational in early February, where her time of 4:39.78 made her a winner in the championship section of the event. More recently, she ran a time of 4:37.43 at the Columbia Last Chance Meet this past weekend. Both of those races were run at the New York Armory. Early in the season she came in first in the Mile at the Great Dane Classic and earned BIG EAST Athlete of the Week honors for that performance.
The preliminaries of the Mile at this weekend's NCAA Championships will take place on Friday evening at 7:15 p.m. Eastern time, while the preliminaries of the 60 meter hurdles follow at 7:45 p.m. Boise State is hosting the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships at Jacksons Indoor Track in Nampa.
