A Q&A with the sophomore sprinter
VILLANOVA, Pa. - Shericka Ward is a sophomore sprinter/hurdler who had an immediate impact on the women's track and field squad in her first year. Ward won the 100m hurdles at the US Junior National Championships in June and was fourth in the 100m hurdles in the Pan American Junior Championships.
This season, Ward has already run BIG EAST qualifying times in the 200m dash and 60m hurdles. She also ran an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 8.43 seconds on Jan. 22 at the Albany Great Dane Classic and was named BIG EAST Female Track Athlete of the Week for her performance.
Why did you decide to come to Villanova?
-My coach from Florida came to Villanova and had been telling me a lot about Villanova, so when I took my visits I was impressed and academically it was the best of the colleges that I was choosing between. Also, coach-wise it was the best from the places I was choosing between.
You've had a lot of success in your first year that continues into this year is there anything that has changed from running in high school to college?
-Yes, the workouts are harder. I've had to push myself more. There is a lot of focus in college. It is really mental. In college everyone is good, so you always have to be on pins and needles when running, even in practice. It is very competitive to race others in practice.
