Wildcat Men in 6th After Day Two of MEAC Track Championships, Advance Three to Finals

GREENSBORO, N.C. – After
the first full day of major event competition at the MEAC Track &
Field Outdoor Championships, the Wildcat men have moved into sixth
place, but are in a position to move up with Saturday’s finals. Led by
Martin Embry’s second-place finish in the decathlon, the ‘Cats also
qualified three athletes to advance to the finals. The women’s team has
yet to score, but are hopeful to add some points in tomorrow’s field
events and relays.
Martin Embry
leads the team after two days, topping the field in the decathlon
coming out of day one. Maryland Eastern Shore’s Jermol Dix overcame
Embry on day two on the strength of field events. The Wildcat sophomore
finished second in the event, finishing with 5,879 points in the
decathlon, and starting the scoring off for B-CU in the meet. Through
the course of the event, Embry notched the top decathlon performances in
the 100m (11.17) and 400m (49.15).
Meanwhile, also in the decathlon, Curtis Riggins
added to B-CU’s early point total with a fourth place finish for the
multi-event. Riggins picked up the top spots in two of day two’s tougher
events, winning the 1500m run (4:47.38) and pole vault (11-09.75 ft.).
The Wildcat men qualified three for Saturday’s final in three different events of Friday’s preliminaries. Kemar Clarke led the charge, notching fourth place in the 110m hurdles prelim with a time of 14.10. Stephon Pamilton recorded the second fastest time in the 400m by five hundredths of a second at 46.74. In the 100m, Chris Jackson was eighth in the preliminaries at 10.64.
Also in the 100m Clarke narrowly missed qualification at 11th with a time of 10.71.
Running one of her fastest times of the season, Alonti Richardson (Leesburg High School, Leesburg Florida) turned in the Wildcat women’s top individual performance at 11th in the 200m dash, recording a time of 24.38. Ileis Figueroa and LaShondra Wilbon each came in 14th in the 800m run (2:19.37) and 400m dash (57.58) respectively. Apple Harris finished 15th in the 100m dash preliminaries at 12.16.
In other men’s preliminary action, Embry finished 11th in the 400m hurdles (58.16) and Pamilton logged a 15th place finish in the 200m (21.65).
For the first day of field events at the MEAC Championships, the Wildcats picked up a ninth place finish from Joshua Perkins in the men’s long jump, and 11th in the women’s shot put for Maketa Ruffin with a distance of 11.77m (38-07.50 ft.).
After two days of competition, the men are in sixth place with 13 points.
The
Wildcats return to action on Saturday morning at the first-class
facility in Greensboro. The day opens with the remainder of the field
events, leads into the event finals and all of the relay events.
